HARENET is Hare-no-kuni Net (晴れの国ネット), an independent internet service provider in Okayama Prefecture, western Japan. Its name borrows Okayama's nickname, the "Land of Sunshine".

What it's used for

• Consumer and small-business internet access across Okayama. Reverse DNS is unambiguous subscriber addressing: bflets-IP-ADDR.harenet.ne.jp and flets-IP-ADDR.harenet.ne.jp for customers riding NTT's FLET'S fibre access, plus mobile-style pools such as p-mif-IP-ADDR.harenet.ne.jp.
• Roughly 9,200 addresses across 210.167.64.0/19 and 110.172.48.0/22, with an IPv6 /32 at 2400:3f80::/32.
• The company also sells web hosting and mail alongside the access business.

Notable

• An eyeball network, and a small one. This is the shape of a regional Japanese ISP that survived the dial-up era by reselling access over NTT's fibre plant while keeping its own JPNIC-assigned addresses and its own routing.
• The flets- and bflets- naming is the giveaway that the physical last mile belongs to NTT West; HARENET provides the ISP layer on top.

Interesting

• HARENET began carrying Okayama customers in the mid-1990s, when it was the prefecture's first ISP, and it is still independently held rather than absorbed into a national carrier — an increasingly rare outcome for a provider of this size in Japan.
