JPIX — Japan Internet Xing Co., Ltd., the operator of the JPIX internet

exchange. Launched in November 1997 as Japan's first commercial IX, backed by a

consortium that included KDD, NEC, Fujitsu and Sony.

What it's used for

• Running the JPIX exchange fabrics (Tokyo, Osaka and other sites) where Japanese and international networks peer with one another.
• JPIX's own infrastructure: route servers, looking glasses, DNS, management and the company's corporate services.

Notable

• This is IXP infrastructure, not a network with users. Its ~1,500 IPv4 addresses carry routers, route servers and management hosts — rDNS resolves to names like gw.jpix.ad.jp, ns1.jpix.ad.jp and bb-fw firewall interfaces.
• The exchange's peering LAN prefixes are deliberately not routed on the global internet, so the traffic JPIX actually carries never appears in this AS's announcements. Address count says nothing about its importance.
• An IXP has no honest bucket in a hosting/eyeball/transit taxonomy: it is a meeting point, not a provider. Treat it as infrastructure, as with [AS4641](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS4641) (HKIX) and [AS5459](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS5459) (LINX).

Interesting

• The company kept the JPIX brand but is registered as "Japan Internet Xing" — the crossing/exchange pun survives the rename.
