MEX — Media EXchange, today the data-centre and connectivity brand of

Computer Engineering & Consulting, Ltd. (CEC) of Tokyo. Media Exchange Co. was

originally a commercial internet-exchange and IDC operator; it handed its data

centre and internet-access businesses to CEC in 2010, and the AS moved with them.

What it's used for

• Internet data centre services: housing/colocation, rental and virtual servers, IP transit and IPv6 for Japanese business customers.
• rDNS matches: hosts resolve under mex.ad.jp, mexne.jp and mvdc.jp (its virtual data-centre platform), including router names like vr-128-000.mex.ad.jp.

Notable

• Its published routing policy lists a long roster of downstream networks, but the observed BGP data shows none — six upstreams (IIJ, KDDI, NTT, OCN and others) and zero downstream ASNs. The routing-registry object is stale; the AS is a multi-homed hosting network, not a transit provider.
• A caution for geolocation: alongside its own Japanese blocks, it announces RIPE space registered to CLOVER, LLC and Philippine space registered to Advance G Advertising Services. None of it has rDNS. Those prefixes belong to other parties and should not be attributed to CEC's data centres.

Interesting

• The MEX handle is the last trace of a company that no longer exists under that name; it was absorbed via Free Bit and then Dream Train Internet, while the brand stayed with the buyer of its data centres.
