AS7377 UCSD

UCSD is the University of California, San Diego, a major public research university and the home of the San Diego Supercomputer Center. AS7377 is its campus network.

• Campus connectivity for students, staff, labs and research groups across four legacy Class B blocks: 128.54.0.0/16, 132.239.0.0/16, 137.110.0.0/16 and 169.228.0.0/16, plus an IPv6 2607:f720::/32.
• Reverse DNS is institutional throughout, with names like agg-vss-1-vlan2-gw.ucsd.edu for campus aggregation routers and per-department zones such as sysnet.ucsd.edu for the computer-science research groups. There is no subscriber-style addressing anywhere.

Notable

• This is university address space, not consumer or commercial space. Traffic from it is far more likely to be a lab machine, a research measurement host, or a student on campus Wi-Fi than a home broadband user.
• ARIN registered the ASN in November 1996. The -Z suffix on the university's org handle is an ARIN legacy-cleanup artefact, not a sign the number changed hands.

Interesting

• AS7377 announces 44.0.0.0/9 and 44.128.0.0/10: the AMPRNet amateur-radio address space, held by Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC). ARDC's internet gateway has long been hosted at UCSD as part of a research project, so the university's AS carries an enormous block of addresses that belong to the worldwide ham-radio community rather than to the campus.
• Those two blocks account for the great majority of the IPv4 addresses attributed to this ASN. Its actual campus footprint is roughly a quarter of a million addresses.
