What it's used for

• NYISO's own operational and corporate networking: grid control-room systems, market clearing and settlement platforms, and connectivity to the market participants and transmission owners it coordinates with.
• Announces a very small footprint: 204.152.46.0/24, 204.152.47.0/24 and 2620:44::/48.

Notable

• The handle NYPP stands for the New York Power Pool, the utility consortium that coordinated the state's grid before NYISO took over that role in the late 1990s. The AS number and its handle predate the current organisation, and were carried across the transition.
• Two /24s is deliberately tiny. A grid operator's critical systems are not internet-facing; the public address space is only the outward edge of a heavily segregated network.

• Independent system operators are an unusual kind of internet holder: neither government agency nor commercial company, but a neutral coordinator that both utilities and generators are obliged to work through.
