AS7122 MTS-ASN

MTS-ASN is the network of Manitoba Telecom Services, Manitoba's incumbent

telephone company, acquired by Bell Canada in 2017 and now operating as

Bell MTS. The AS is registered to Bell Canada, but the network it carries is

the Manitoba access network.

What it's used for

• Consumer and business internet access across Manitoba: this is eyeball space.
• Announces a large legacy inventory, roughly half a million IPv4 addresses, including 142.160.0.0/16, 142.161.0.0/16, 204.112.0.0/16, 205.200.0.0/16 and 207.161.0.0/16.

Notable

• Reverse DNS confirms the subscriber character of the space, with names under dial.bellmts.net and dynamic.bellmts.net carrying per-exchange codes (Thompson, Brandon and so on). Dial-up naming still lingers in some pools.
• This is the provincial access network, not Bell's national backbone. Bell Canada's transit and core routing sit on separate ASNs; do not read this one as a carrier backbone just because Bell is the registrant.

Interesting

• The MTS name survives in the AS handle and throughout reverse DNS years after the acquisition. Renaming an AS handle is cosmetic and rarely worth the churn, so old carrier identities persist in routing data long after the brand disappears from storefronts.
