AS7046 RFC2270-UUNET-CUSTOMER

RFC2270-UUNET-CUSTOMER is a shared autonomous system operated by UUNET, now part of Verizon Business. It is not one organisation's network: it is the AS number UUNET hands to customer sites that are single-homed to it, following the practice described in RFC 2270 ("Using a Dedicated AS Number for Sites Homed to a Single Provider").

What it's used for

• Originating the prefixes of many separate UUNET/Verizon customer networks that all sit behind the same upstream, so each does not need its own globally unique AS number.
• Several hundred IPv4 prefixes and a couple of dozen IPv6 prefixes are announced under it, adding up to roughly half a million addresses.

Notable

• Because the AS is shared, its address space belongs to unrelated end customers rather than to Verizon itself. Reverse DNS across it lands on a mix of enterprise, government and legacy carrier-customer names, with no single consistent pattern.
• Geolocating this AS as a whole is meaningless: the prefixes under it can be anywhere Verizon Business serves.
• The ASN was registered with ARIN in the mid-1990s, during UUNET's period as one of the dominant commercial internet backbones.
