AS6854 SYNTERRA-AS

SYNTERRA-AS is held today by PJSC MegaFon. It is the former Synterra fixed-line network, which MegaFon absorbed; the Synterra name survives in the AS handle and across the network's router rDNS.

What it's used for

• A fixed backbone and corporate-access network, distinct from MegaFon's mobile subscriber network. Core routers still resolve under main.synterra.ru, with nodes named for cities across Russia.
• The address space it originates is largely assigned to corporate and public-sector customers; among the hosts that resolve are Russian federal agencies.

Notable

• Do not inherit MegaFon's kind from the parent brand. MegaFon is best known as a mobile operator, but this AS is not the mobile network. It is the fixed/corporate side of the group.
• The prefixes it announces are registered as RU-MEGAFON-… allocations, so the ownership is unambiguous even where the rDNS still says Synterra.

Interesting

• The rDNS is an unusually clean archaeological record: an acquired carrier's naming scheme, city by city, still in production years after the brand disappeared.
