AS6534 OCEANIC-CABLE

OCEANIC-CABLE is the legacy autonomous system of Oceanic Cable, the dominant cable operator in Hawaii. Oceanic passed through Time Warner Cable and is today part of Charter Communications, which holds the ARIN registration.

What it's used for

• Network infrastructure rather than subscriber access. The AS originates only a couple of prefixes, and their reverse DNS resolves to Charter's infrastructure domain (inf.spectrum.com) and to device-style names under hicv.net — hostnames like hnllhiuf01w and milnhiqfx02 encode Honolulu and Mililani site codes.
• Hawaii's residential Spectrum subscribers are numbered out of Charter's much larger nationwide autonomous systems, not this one.

Notable

• Do not read this AS as an eyeball network just because its parent is a cable ISP. What it actually announces is a small block of routers and platform addressing; the consumer address pools live elsewhere in Charter's estate.
• The hicv label is a fossil of Hawaii Cablevision, the naming that predates both the Time Warner and Charter eras. Acquisition rarely rewrites rDNS.

Interesting

• The ASN is a genuine 1996 ARIN registration, from the period when a state's incumbent cable operator was still an independent regional company. The number survived two corporate absorptions while the brand on the truck changed twice.
