CENTURYLINK-MTIPS1-STN is one of CenturyLink's (now Lumen's) MTIPS

autonomous systems — Managed Trusted Internet Protocol Service, the GSA-contract

service that gives US federal agencies a compliant, monitored gateway to the

public internet. Its companion is

What it's used for

• Fronting federal civilian agencies' internet connections through a Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) portal, as required by the OMB TIC initiative and sold under the GSA Networx and EIS contracts.
• Announces a small footprint — a handful of IPv4 prefixes plus IPv6.

Notable

• Although the ASN belongs to a commercial carrier, the traffic is government: reverse DNS in the space resolves to federal .gov agency endpoints. An address here is best read as a US federal agency behind a managed security gateway, not as CenturyLink's own network.
• MTIPS is a security service, so the space is intentionally small and concentrated. It is not transit, hosting or consumer broadband.

Interesting

• The number is registered to the same CenturyLink organisation as [AS6222](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS6222), which carries former-Embarq consumer DSL. Same holder, entirely different kind of network — a good reminder that a carrier's parent identity tells you very little about what any one of its ASNs actually does.
