AS6058 NORTHWESTEL-INC

AS6058 (NORTHWESTEL-INC) is the network of Northwestel, the incumbent

telecommunications carrier for northern Canada — Yukon, the Northwest

Territories, Nunavut and northern British Columbia.

What it's used for

• Residential and business connectivity across Canada's three territories: home internet (fibre, cable and DSL), phone, and the transport links that carry traffic between remote northern communities and the rest of Canada.
• Addresses here are overwhelmingly subscriber addresses, so an IP in this range usually means a household or small business somewhere in the Canadian North.

Notable

• Northwestel serves an enormous service area with a very small population, much of it reachable only by satellite, microwave or long-haul fibre built along highway corridors. Its ~31,000 IPv4 addresses spread across four dozen prefixes reflect a network that is geographically vast but numerically small.
• It is a subsidiary of Bell Canada (BCE). In June 2024 Bell agreed to sell Northwestel for about C$1 billion to Sixty North Unity, a consortium of Indigenous organisations from the three territories, which would have made it the largest fully Indigenous-owned telecom in the world. The deal has not closed — financing was still unresolved as of 2026 — so Northwestel remains under Bell ownership.
