What it's used for

• A national backbone connecting central and local government agencies in Taiwan.
• Shared services for the public sector: agency email and internet access, directory services, and the network underlay for e-government systems such as tax and vehicle/driver registration platforms.

Notable

• GSN was built in 1997 to give government agencies a common, independently managed network environment with its own security posture, rather than having each agency buy connectivity separately.
• It reaches tens of thousands of access lines across government, and also supports disaster response and traffic monitoring systems.

Interesting

• The holder, Chunghwa Telecom's Data Communication Business Group, is the same business unit that runs HiNet — but AS4782 is the government network, not the commercial consumer ISP. Do not read a GSN address as a HiNet broadband subscriber.
