FRONTIER-EPIX is held by Frontier Communications of America. The EPIX

name is the giveaway: this network began as epix, the Eastern Pennsylvania

Internet Exchange, an early Pennsylvania internet service that came to Frontier

through its acquisition of Commonwealth Telephone.

What it's used for

• Broadband internet access for homes and businesses across Frontier's Pennsylvania and neighbouring service territory.
• Carries a substantial pool of IPv4 — well over a hundred thousand addresses spread across many prefixes, the usual shape of a subscriber-access network.

Notable

• An eyeball network: addresses here are handed to end customers, so an IP in this range is normally a residential or small-business subscriber rather than a server.
• Frontier operates several ASNs; this one carries the legacy epix footprint rather than the whole company.

Interesting

• epix was one of the earliest internet services in Pennsylvania, launched by a local telephone company in the mid-1990s and growing into a dial-up ISP with tens of thousands of customers before the telco consolidations that eventually put it inside Frontier.
