AS3314 KFKI-AS IP networks of KFKI

KFKI-AS is the network of the Wigner Research Centre for Physics in Budapest,

the successor of KFKI — the Central Research Institute for Physics — on the

Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Csillebérc campus.

What it's used for

• Campus networking for the research centre and the institutes sharing the KFKI site.
• Scientific computing and data-transfer workloads typical of a physics institute: simulation clusters, storage, and links to national and European research networks.

Notable

• The registration covers a full legacy /16 (about 65,000 IPv4 addresses), a size handed out to research institutions in the early 1990s and rarely granted today.
• Address space and AS numbers of this vintage in Hungary trace back to the first academic connections into the European research internet, well before commercial ISPs arrived.

Interesting

• The Wigner Datacentre on the same campus has hosted large-scale particle physics computing capacity, giving this otherwise quiet academic AS an unusual amount of scientific data behind it.
