AS3132 Red Cientifica Peruana

Red Científica Peruana, the Peruvian Scientific Network, is the organisation that

first connected Peru to the internet. Founded in 1991 as a non-profit association

of universities and civil-society institutions, it remains an internet

infrastructure and services organisation today.

What it's used for

• Internet connectivity and internet-related services in Peru, grown out of a research and academic networking mission. RCP also administers Peru's .pe domain names.

Notable

• RCP established Peru's first internet connection via satellite in the early 1990s and became the country's first ISP, before commercial providers existed there.
• It opened Peru's first public internet booth in 1994 at the Ricardo Palma cultural centre, seeding the cabinas públicas model of shared public internet access that shaped how a generation of Peruvians first got online.
• The ASN is a 1993 LACNIC-region registration, so the low number here is a genuine early allocation, not a reissue.

Interesting

• RCP's founder, José Soriano, is an Internet Hall of Fame inductee, recognised for exactly this work of getting a country connected and keeping that access public.
