AS11884 IWPBGP

IWPBGP is the AS of Insteel Industries, Inc., the Mount Airy, North Carolina

manufacturer of steel wire reinforcing products for concrete construction. The

handle expands to Insteel Wire Products, the operating subsidiary, plus a blunt

BGP suffix. This is a manufacturer's corporate network, nothing more exotic.

What it's used for

Corporate connectivity for an industrial company with a dozen or so plants across

the US. RIS sees a single prefix, 96.10.201.0/24 (256 addresses), no IPv6, and

two observed neighbours. Two neighbours is the end-site signature: a pair of

upstreams for redundancy, no downstream customers, nothing sold on. The space

plausibly fronts corporate email, VPN concentrators and the customer-facing

ordering systems that tie plants to concrete-products manufacturers.

Notable

• The /24 is registered in ARIN to Charter Communications, not to Insteel, and the sampled reverse DNS lands under biz.spectrum.com. That combination is not a leased-address or brokerage tell. It is ordinary provider-assigned space: Charter Spectrum Business hands a business customer a /24 out of its own pool, keeps the registration and the default rDNS, and the customer announces it from its own ASN. The tell for brokered space is unrelated registrants across multiple RIRs, not a customer sitting on its upstream's addresses.
• Because the rDNS is Charter's default template rather than anything Insteel chose, it tells you the access technology and the carrier, and nothing at all about what the hosts behind those addresses actually do.
