SYRACUSE-UNIVERSITY is Syracuse University's campus network, in Syracuse, New York. The reverse DNS settles it beyond argument: the space is full of syr.edu hostnames.

What it's used for

Campus connectivity, for the usual mixture of administration, teaching, residential halls and research. RIS observes nine IPv4 prefixes carrying about 66,300 addresses, one IPv6 prefix (2620:4e::/48), and four observed BGP neighbours.

The core of the network is the legacy /16 128.230.0.0/16, announced whole and also as its four /18 quarters, all registered in ARIN as SYR-UNIV-NET to Syracuse University. The sampled rDNS lands squarely inside the university: syr-64-5.syr.edu and syr-192-5.syr.edu are generic campus addresses, segdb-test.phy.syr.edu is a test host in the physics department, and as-gdhoke-vm02.syr.edu and as-psy-titanium.syr.edu are machines in the College of Arts and Sciences and its psychology department. Departmental and per-machine naming like this is what a real university network looks like from the outside.

Notable

Two announced prefixes are registered to someone other than the university: 74.80.186.0/24 to Performive LLC and 149.119.6.0/24 to Cogent Communications. Neither is a red flag. Those are provider-assigned blocks, space a hosting company or a transit carrier hands to a customer that then announces it from its own AS. The tell for leased or brokered space is unrelated registrants, not merely non-holder ones, and a university sitting on a slice of its hosting provider's and its transit provider's space is ordinary.
