IRISNETWORKS is IRIS Networks, a regional fibre-optic transport carrier headquartered on Commerce Street in Nashville, Tennessee. It sells middle-mile capacity — dark fibre, carrier ethernet, dedicated internet access and wireless backhaul — across Tennessee and the neighbouring states.

What it's used for

Wholesale transit and transport, not eyeball access. The routing shape makes the case on its own: RIS sees only 5 IPv4 prefixes (4,864 addresses) and one IPv6 block, 2607:f920::/32, but 42 observed BGP neighbours. Peer count is the honest role signal here, and forty-plus adjacencies against fewer than five thousand addresses is a carrier signature. An enterprise or a small ISP holding the same amount of address space would peer with a handful of upstreams. IRIS carries other people's traffic and other people's prefixes, so its own originated footprint stays small while its position in the middle of AS paths stays busy.

Notable

Four of the five prefixes are registered to IRIS Networks itself. The fifth, 64.3.212.0/23, registers to Verizon Business under an XOXO-BLK handle — legacy XO Communications space. That is provider-assigned address space carried by the customer's own AS, a routine carrier arrangement, not a sign of leased or brokered inventory.

ARIN dates the AS number to 2007, not the early internet. Its low number is an artifact of ARIN reissuing space in this range, and the company's own history reaches back further than the ASN does.
