USD is the University of South Dakota, the state's flagship public university in Vermillion. This is a campus network, and everything in the evidence agrees.

What it's used for

RIS sees 9 IPv4 prefixes, 17,152 addresses, no IPv6, and only 2 observed neighbours. The low neighbour count is the important part. A network with this many addresses would look like a regional provider if it peered widely; two neighbours instead says it is a leaf, taking transit (typically through a state or regional research network) and originating only its own space.

Every prefix registers in ARIN to the University of South Dakota. The handles are unusually legible: NETBLK-COYOTENET and COYOTE-NET are named for the Coyotes, the university's athletic nickname, and USD-EDU is self-explanatory. The SDNET-BLK2-* blocks carve up 206.176.0.0/20 into progressively smaller pieces, the residue of a state-network allocation being subdivided over time.

Notable

One block, 206.176.58.0/24, registers to USD Medical School rather than the university proper. That is an internal departmental registration inside the same institution, not a third party, and it is a good example of why the registrant field must be read for the organisation rather than pattern-matched for exact string equality with the AS holder.

Interesting

No IPv6 is announced in the RIS window, which is a little unusual for a research-adjacent .edu in 2026 and puts USD behind many of its peers on dual-stack. Reverse DNS returned nothing on the twenty addresses sampled, but that is a sampling result and no conclusion should be drawn from it.
