AS11698 WIATEL

WIATEL is the network of the Western Iowa Telephone Association, a member-owned rural

telephone cooperative serving small towns in western Iowa (trading as WIATEL). It is an

eyeball access network: the addresses here terminate on subscribers, not on servers.

What it's used for

• Rural broadband, telephone and DSL/fibre access. RIS sees 4 IPv4 prefixes / 4,864 addresses plus one IPv6 /32 (2607:2e40::/32), behind 1 observed neighbour — one upstream, which is what a co-op of this size buys.
• The reverse DNS is the clearest evidence of what the space carries: movl-3-208-126-75-5.dsl.netins.net and movl-216-51-168-5.wiatel.net are per-address subscriber-style names, dsl. naming the access technology and movl reading as a town or exchange code. Per-line PTRs of that shape are an access pool, not hosting.

Notable

• All four prefixes register to the co-op itself under variations of its own name (WIATEL, Western Iowa Telephone Assn., Western Iowa Telephone). Same operator, same space, no third-party registrants — a real ISP running its own inventory.
• The netins.net domain on one block is worth reading carefully: that is Iowa Network Services / Aureon, the statewide carrier many Iowa independents buy aggregation from. A customer block wearing its upstream's rDNS is normal and does not make this network Aureon's — the registrant record still says Western Iowa Telephone.

Interesting

• The IPv6 /32 is a full RIR allocation. Small rural cooperatives are frequently ahead of much larger US operators on IPv6, and this one has had address space to deploy for years.
