AS-ENVI-1 is registered today to telMAX Inc., the Ontario fibre-to-the-home builder, and carries the network of ENVI, the municipal broadband venture telMAX acquired. RIS sees 4 IPv4 prefixes, roughly 2,048 addresses, 1 IPv6 prefix (2604:c4c0::/32), and 1 observed BGP neighbour.

What it's used for

Residential and small-business fibre access in south-central Ontario. ENVI was created in 2018 by the Town of Newmarket as a subsidiary of the local power utility, built roughly 30 km of fibre and served a few hundred customers, and was sold to Whitchurch-Stouffville-based telMAX in October 2022 — the acquisition was reported at the time as a way to accelerate local fibre coverage. The AS handle and the prefix registrations preserve that history exactly: three blocks register to telMAX Inc. (ENVI-BLK-003, ONTAR-53, ENVI-53-NET4) and one, 38.111.108.0/23, still registers to Envi Networks Ltd. — an intra-group leftover from the acquisition, not a third-party registrant. The 38.111 block is Cogent-derived space, consistent with the CGNT in its netblock name; the single observed neighbour says this AS buys transit from essentially one upstream.

Notable

A /32 of IPv6 against only ~2,000 IPv4 addresses is the tell of an access network built recently rather than grown out of the dial-up era: a greenfield FTTH operator gets a full IPv6 allocation from the start and rations scarce IPv4. The sampled reverse DNS lands on mail.newmarketgroup.com, a further echo of the Newmarket utility group that stood the network up.
