AS11609 ELAVON

ELAVON is Elavon, the merchant payment-processing business of U.S. Bancorp. This is a corporate payments network, not a service provider — the AS exists to route the company's own transaction infrastructure.

What it's used for

Card acquiring and merchant processing: the endpoints that merchants, gateways and partner banks connect to in order to authorise and settle payments. The address footprint is small and dense, and that fits — payments infrastructure is a modest number of hardened, highly available endpoints, not a large population of hosts. RIS sees 16 announced v4 prefixes carrying just 3,328 addresses, no IPv6, and 5 observed BGP neighbours. Multiple upstreams over a tiny address count is the classic multi-homed enterprise posture: redundancy is bought for availability, not for capacity.

Notable

The prefix registrants section is the thing to read here, and it exonerates rather than convicts. Most of the announced space (204.194.192.0/22, 204.194.196.0/22 and the /24s carved from them) is registered to U.S. BANCORP under US-BANCORP-EXTERNAL-4, not to Elavon; only 216.235.188.0/23 and 198.203.191.0/24 register to ELAVON directly. A different registrant from the announcing holder is only a warning sign when the registrants are unrelated. Elavon is a U.S. Bancorp subsidiary, so this is intra-group corporate history — the parent holds the address space, the subsidiary announces it.

Interesting

Nearly every prefix appears both as an aggregate and as its component /24s. Deliberate de-aggregation like that is a common anti-hijack and traffic-steering measure on networks where a routing outage means declined transactions.
