Two observed BGP neighbours. For a network with 65k addresses that is a small number, and it is the useful signal: a university edge takes transit from one or two providers (regionally, that usually means a state research-and-education network plus a commercial upstream) and does not peer widely. A wholesale carrier moving comparable address volume would show neighbours in the hundreds. So despite the size, this is an eyeball-and-servers campus, not infrastructure.

The absence of any announced IPv6 is worth flagging for an R&E network of this size — universities are usually among the earlier adopters, and RIS sees none here.

Easy to confuse with [AS11602](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS11602), the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City. Two separate South Dakota institutions, two separate ASes, five numbers apart. The similarity of the names is a good reminder that an AS handle identifies a legal entity, not a category.
