INTERNET2-RESEARCH-EDU is Internet2, the member-owned consortium that runs the United States' national research and education backbone. RIS sees no announced prefixes at all — v4 or v6 — but 119 observed BGP neighbours.

What it's used for

Backbone transit and peering for research and education. The zero-prefix, high-neighbour shape is not a dormant network; it is the signature of a pure transit AS. Internet2 originates essentially nothing of its own into the global table because the address space belongs to its connectors: the regional R&E networks, universities, national laboratories and museums that attach to it. Their prefixes are announced from their own AS numbers, and AS11537 appears in the middle of the path rather than at its end. Neighbour count is the honest role signal here, and 119 of them against zero addresses says carrier, not end-site.

Because the AS carries no addresses, there is nothing in it to geolocate — any IP-level classification of Internet2 belongs to the connector networks behind it, not to this number.

Interesting

Internet2 is where a large amount of production research traffic actually moves: bulk data transfer between campuses, instrument and observatory feeds, and the interconnects that reach peer national networks abroad. It is also a long-standing testbed for network technology that later shows up in commercial carriers, which is why an AS that announces nothing is one of the most-peered numbers in this range.
