AS11340 Red Universitaria Nacional

AS11340 is Red Universitaria Nacional (REUNA), Chile's national research and education network — the NREN that connects the country's universities and research institutions to each other and to the international academic backbone. RIS sees 120 IPv4 prefixes, 104,192 addresses, and 17 observed neighbours.

What it's used for

Carrying member institutions' traffic. REUNA does not primarily announce space it owns; it announces the space of the universities it serves, which is why the prefix registrants read like a roster of Chilean higher education rather than like a single operator's inventory. 152.74.0.0/16 is registered to the Universidad de Concepción. 200.10.16.0/21 is registered to the Universidad de La Frontera. The reverse DNS confirms the same picture from the other direction: sampled addresses answer as wifihemero.bib.ufro.cl (a library wifi network at Universidad de La Frontera), www.inele.ufro.cl (an engineering department web host), and repofinanzas.utalca.cl and globalip1025.utalca.cl at the Universidad de Talca.

That mix — a /16 here, a scatter of 146.83.x/24s there, each traceable to a different named university — is exactly the shape an NREN makes, and it is the one case where many different registrants under one AS is entirely benign. The members are not unrelated third parties; they are the network's constituency. Several RDAP lookups in this range failed outright, which is a failed call and not a clearance, so we lean on the reverse DNS and the two registrants that did resolve.

Interesting

Seventeen observed neighbours against a hundred thousand addresses is the profile of a national aggregator, not a commercial carrier: REUNA peers with a modest set of upstreams and exchanges, and everything downstream of it is a campus. Addresses in 146.83.0.0/16, 152.74.0.0/16 and REUNA's 200.x blocks geolocate to Chilean university campuses — from Arica to Punta Arenas — not to a single city.
