AS11252 ISU-NET-AS

AS11252 (ISU-NET-AS) is the campus network of Idaho State University, the public research university in Pocatello, Idaho. It is a textbook university AS: one legacy /16, a couple of upstreams, and first-party reverse DNS.

What it's used for

Campus networking. RIS observes 9 IPv4 prefixes carrying 67,584 addresses, no IPv6, and two observed neighbours. The address count is almost entirely one block: 134.50.0.0/16 is 65,536 of those addresses, the classic university legacy allocation from the era when a campus took a /16 and numbered every machine on it publicly. The remaining routes are more-specifics carved out of that same /16 plus a handful of /23s, which is the normal way a campus steers particular subnets.

Two neighbours is the correct shape for a university: it buys transit or peers via a regional/research upstream rather than accumulating the hundreds of neighbours a carrier would. Reverse DNS confirms the first-party read directly, with 134.50.0.5 resolving to storm.isu.edu.

Notable

The prefix registrants are worth reading, because they look mixed at a glance and are not. The 134.50 space is registered to Idaho State University, but the 206.207.64.0-ish /23s are registered to the University of Idaho under the handle IDAHO-WESTNET. These are two sibling Idaho public universities, and one announcing space registered to the other is the ordinary shape of shared state higher-education networking. It is not the unrelated-third-party registrant pattern that signals IP leasing.

Interesting

No IPv6 is announced at all. For a research university sitting on a full legacy /16, that is the whole explanation: an institution with 65,536 public addresses it has never exhausted feels none of the address pressure that drove v6 adoption elsewhere.
