ITRONHOSTINGAS is the hosting AS of Itron, Inc., the utility-technology company at 2111 North Molter Road, Liberty Lake, Washington (ARIN org ITRON-3). Itron builds smart electricity, gas and water meters and the metering-data platforms utilities run behind them; this AS carries the hosted side of that business.

What it's used for

A very small colocated server footprint, not an access network. RIS observes two IPv4 prefixes / 512 addresses, no IPv6, and a single observed neighbour. One neighbour means one upstream: this AS exists to give Itron portable addressing and BGP control over a specific hosting environment, not to interconnect with the wider internet.

The reverse DNS is the interesting part. The 136.179.130.0/24 addresses answer under switchnap.com — the reverse zone of Switch, the Las Vegas colocation operator — and RDAP shows that prefix registered to SWITCH-LTD, while the second prefix (69.194.138.0/24) is registered to Itron itself as ITRONINC-138.

Notable

Announcing a prefix registered to someone else is the pattern that usually warrants suspicion, but here it is benign and easily explained: one block is Itron's own space, the other is provider-assigned space from its colocation host, still wearing the host's default rDNS. A single, named, findable US corporation with one upstream is the opposite of the multi-registrant, multi-RIR shape that marks an IP-leasing operation.
