PITNEYBOWES-AS-1 is the corporate autonomous system of Pitney Bowes Incorporated, the American shipping, mailing and e-commerce logistics company. It is an enterprise network: the prefixes are registered to Pitney Bowes' own handles (PBFS, PB-EUROPE) and to legacy UUNET customer-assignment space (UU-G1), not to unrelated third parties.

What it's used for

Pitney Bowes' own internet presence and, given the business, the externally reachable side of its mailing, shipping and postage platforms — the systems customers and franking machines talk to. The AS announces 15 IPv4 prefixes (~4,352 addresses), no IPv6, and shows 5 observed neighbours in RIS: a small multihomed upstream set, consistent with a company that buys transit at a handful of sites rather than peering as a carrier.

The prefix registrations fall into three families, all of them still Pitney Bowes. PBFS covers the bulk of the network — the 199.231.32.0–199.231.50.0 /23s and /24s, the company's own ARIN space. UU-G1 covers 206.136.84.0/24, 206.136.86.0/24 and 206.136.87.0/24, assignments out of the old UUNET customer pool and a fingerprint of a corporate network that was connected in the UUNET era and never renumbered. PB-EUROPE covers 193.242.234.0/24, a RIPE-registered block for the European side of the business.

Interesting

Space split across two RIRs under several different registrant handles is exactly the surface pattern that flags an address broker or a leasing operation. Here it is nothing of the sort: every registrant resolves back to the same real, findable company or to its historical upstream. The lesson generalises — the discriminator is who the registrants are, not how untidy the inventory looks.
