AS11049 DYN

DYN was the AS of Dyn, Inc., the Manchester, New Hampshire managed-DNS company, and it now belongs to Oracle Corporation, which acquired Dyn in 2016. The registry still carries the old handle, but the routing is pure Oracle: roughly two dozen IPv4 prefixes totalling about 22,000 addresses, an equally large IPv6 footprint, and seven observed BGP neighbours.

What it's used for

The space carries Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services rather than the old Dyn platform. The sampled reverse DNS resolves under oci.oraclecloud16.com in an OCI region naming scheme, on a hostname belonging to Oracle's cloud email service — so what this AS announces today is production cloud infrastructure, not the legacy managed-DNS anycast estate. The prefix registrants say the same thing: ORACLE-4, ORACLE-CH and, tellingly, ORACLE-SUN-LEGACY-ACQUISITIONS, the block that came in with Sun Microsystems.

This is a good example of an AS handle outliving the company it names. Anyone matching on the string DYN would conclude they were looking at a DNS provider; the inventory says a hyperscale cloud. Classify by what the space carries, not by what the handle remembers.

Interesting

Seven observed neighbours against 22,000 addresses is low, and it is the signature of a cloud provider's edge AS rather than its backbone: Oracle carries its own traffic between regions and only needs a small set of upstream and peering adjacencies here. Compare that with a wholesale carrier of the same address size, which would show hundreds.
