UQ is the Université du Québec, the province-wide public university network whose constituent establishments span Montréal, Québec City, Trois-Rivières, Chicoutimi, Rimouski, Gatineau and beyond. The AS carries the university system's own address space.

What it's used for

Campus and inter-campus connectivity for the UQ network. RIS observes 16 announced IPv4 prefixes carrying 7,936 addresses, no IPv6, and a single observed BGP neighbour — one upstream, which for a Canadian university means the provincial research and education network rather than a commercial carrier.

Reverse DNS is entirely first-party and reads like a campus: smtp.rruq.ca and poste133.rruq.ca (the UQ telecommunications network), comix-3348.uqss.uquebec.ca, Amnesix.UQSS.UQuebec.CA. Named institutional hosts under the university's own domains — mail servers, workstations, service machines. Nothing here looks like customer or hosting space.

The registrant list is a small history of Canadian academic addressing: UQUEBEC-CA holds the modern 207.162.32.0/20, while the older /24s carry handles like UQUEBEC1, UQUEBEC2, UQUEBEC7, NETBLK-UQUEBEC-8, UQSS-IP-NET and — best of all — UQX25-IPNET, a block whose name still records the X.25 era it was allocated in. Every registrant is the university itself; the fragmentation is age, not third-party space.
