PIONEERINTERNET is the internet-facing AS of The Pioneer Telephone Association, Inc., a member-owned rural telephone cooperative in Ulysses, Kansas that trades as Pioneer Communications and serves subscribers across southwest Kansas.

What it's used for

Broadband access for a rural incumbent telco. RIS sees 34 announced IPv4 prefixes carrying roughly 24,576 addresses and no IPv6, against only 5 observed BGP neighbours. That combination is the classic shape of an eyeball network rather than a carrier: an access provider buys transit from a small number of upstreams and hands the addresses out to subscribers, whereas a wholesale transit AS of comparable size would peer with hundreds of others.

The reverse DNS makes the subscriber role explicit and even names the access technology. Sampled PTRs land on dsl-, fttp- and ss-* hostnames under pld.com, with router-style names under pioncomm.net — DSL lines, fibre-to-the-premises drops and other subscriber pools, exactly what a cooperative that has been rebuilding copper into fibre would present.

The announced space is spread across three unrelated legacy ranges — 24.224.0.0/19, 206.253.32.0/19 and 209.42.64.0/19 — plus a long tail of /21s, /23s and /24s deaggregated out of them. Carving a small allocation into dozens of more-specifics is normal for a co-op with many scattered exchanges and multiple upstream handoffs; it is traffic engineering, not evidence of resale.
