AS10725 GENENTECH

GENENTECH is the corporate network of Genentech, Inc., the South San Francisco biotechnology company and a member of the Roche group. The reverse DNS confirms the holder directly: sampled addresses resolve under gene.com, Genentech's own domain.

RIS observes 4 announced IPv4 prefixes carrying 1,024 addresses, 3 IPv6 prefixes, and 3 observed neighbours. Three neighbours puts this firmly in enterprise territory — a hosting or transit business with this much space would peer with orders of magnitude more networks.

The reverse DNS is unusually informative for a corporate block. smtaintrwc02-out.gene.com is an outbound mail relay, and b2bexval52-rwc.gene.com is plainly a business-to-business exchange endpoint. The rwc fragment repeats in both, reading as a site code. What that describes is exactly what a large pharmaceutical company needs a public edge for: mail hygiene, and B2B integration gateways for the constant machine-to-machine document exchange with contract manufacturers, clinical research organisations, distributors, regulators and payers. The research and manufacturing systems themselves sit behind that edge, not on it.

The IPv4 space is split between legacy 192.12.78.0/24 and a modern 72.34.128.0 run, while the IPv6 is announced from 2a04:c442::/32 — a RIPE NCC allocation, not an ARIN one. Seeing RIPE-region IPv6 originated by a US-based AS is consistent with addressing handed down from Genentech's Swiss-headquartered parent, and it is a good reminder that an address block's RIR says nothing reliable about where the network actually is.
