What it's used for

SelectNet sells internet access — DSL historically, Ethernet-over-fiber and fixed wireless more recently — alongside web hosting, domain registration and e-commerce services, aimed at businesses rather than households. The reverse DNS makes that visible in an unusually direct way. Most sampled addresses carry first-party templated names like select12-5.select.net, but scattered among them are customer identities: ketchbrewing.com, nat-5.rb.firstchoice.com, disguise-133.disguise.com. Those are business customers, and the nat- name in particular is the signature of an office connection sitting behind network address translation on a provider-assigned address.

Deaggregating a /20 to the /24 level with only two upstreams is more granularity than traffic engineering requires; it is the shape of a network that assigns and announces space customer by customer.
