LEE-ASN is Lee Enterprises, Incorporated, the American local-news publisher headquartered in Davenport, Iowa, which owns daily and weekly newspapers and their websites across dozens of markets.

What it's used for

Two different things, and the reverse DNS separates them cleanly.

The AS announces 6 IPv4 prefixes totalling 11,264 addresses, no IPv6, and RIS sees four observed neighbours. Four neighbours is an end-site multi-homing for resilience, not a carrier.

Most of the space, the 192.104.192.0/19 and 192.104.224.0/21, plus 209.96.3.0/24, samples with PTRs under rev.lee.net, the publisher's own domain. But three /24s, 192.104.182.0/24, 192.104.183.0/24 and 192.104.185.0/24, sample under rev.tn-cloud.net. That is TownNews, now BLOX Digital, the news content-management and hosting SaaS that Lee majority-owns. Its BLOX CMS platform runs the websites of a large share of the US local-news industry, including many publishers unrelated to Lee.

So this is not purely a corporate network. Part of it is a media company's own estate, and part of it is a hosting platform whose tenants are third-party newspapers.

Notable

This is a clean worked example of classifying by what the space carries rather than by what the holder is. The holder is a newspaper publisher, which sounds like a straightforward enterprise. The inventory shows a media SaaS platform living inside the same ASN, and any classifier that stops at the corporate name will mislabel the tenants' traffic.

Interesting

The 192.104.0.0 range is old class-C territory, and Lee sits in it with a /19 and a /21 carved from the same parent, an early publisher-sized allocation that later turned out to be big enough to host a chunk of the industry's websites as well.
