AS10466 MAGPI

MAGPI is the Mid-Atlantic Gigapop in Philadelphia for Internet2, a regional research-and-education aggregation point run by the University of Pennsylvania's Information Systems and Computing organisation. It has connected universities, schools and cultural institutions across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware to the national R&E backbone since 1997.

What it's used for

MAGPI is a GigaPoP: a shared on-ramp rather than a destination network. Member campuses, K-12 districts, museums and libraries hand their traffic to MAGPI, which aggregates it and passes it up to the Internet2 national backbone. The AS therefore exists to run the exchange fabric itself, not to host content or serve subscribers.

This is an education / research network, and the routing shape is exactly what that predicts. RIS sees only 2 announced IPv4 prefixes (1,024 addresses) and 1 IPv6 prefix — a 216.27.100.0/23 and 2001:468:1800::/40. The IPv6 block is the giveaway: 2001:468::/32 is Internet2's allocation, and a /40 carved out of it is handed to a connector, not bought on the open market. Penn's own campus space is announced elsewhere, so the address count here reflects only MAGPI's own infrastructure — loopbacks, router interfaces and NOC systems.

The 4 observed neighbours confirm the role. A commercial carrier of any consequence peers with hundreds of ASes; MAGPI's members mostly ride it as a customer path rather than appearing as distinct BGP neighbours in public collectors, so the aggregator's reach is far wider than its neighbour count suggests.
