AS10308 NEIUNET

NEIUNET is the campus network of Northeastern Illinois University, a public university on Chicago's Northwest Side. It exists so the university can announce its own address space independently of whichever research or commercial network is upstream on a given day.

What it's used for

University internet-facing services and campus edge connectivity: the public side of a mid-sized state university — web, mail, VPN concentrators, DNS, and whatever else has to be reachable from off campus.

Notable

This is education, and the reverse DNS proves it rather than merely suggesting it. Every sampled address resolves under neiu.edu, and each one carries the same token: neiu-dmz-14-5.neiu.edu, neiu-dmz-13-133.neiu.edu, neiu-dmz-15-5.neiu.edu. DMZ is the giveaway. This is not a subscriber pool and not a server farm sold by the hour; it is the perimeter segment of an enterprise campus, where public-facing hosts sit between the internet and the internal network. The naming was applied by the institution itself, in its own .edu zone.

Routing is small and consistent with that. RIS sees 4 IPv4 prefixes carrying 768 addresses — a /23 and three /24s, all inside 66.99.13.0–66.99.15.255, one of them a deaggregate of the other — and only 2 BGP neighbours. Two adjacencies is the classic single-site multihome: a commodity ISP plus a research-network path, announced from one border router pair.

Interesting

768 routed addresses is tiny for a university with tens of thousands of alumni. It is a sign of a campus that long ago moved its student and staff population behind NAT and kept only the DMZ in public space.
