YAHOO-TW1 is Yahoo Inc.'s Taiwanese network. Taiwan is one of the few markets where

Yahoo remained a dominant consumer portal long after it faded elsewhere, and this AS is the

infrastructure that served it.

What it's used for

• Serving Yahoo's own content and services to users in Taiwan and the surrounding region: the portal, mail, news and auctions properties, front-ended by load balancers inside Yahoo-operated space rather than a third-party CDN.
• The announced space is Yahoo's own: 119.160.240.0/20, 202.43.192.0/21, 203.84.192.0/21 and 203.84.200.0/21, several /21s out of 124.108.96.0/19, plus IPv6 from 2406:2000::/32 (2406:2000:fc::/46 and a pair of /48s).

Notable

• Content hosting, and the reverse DNS spells out the machine roles. Sampled PTRs resolve to names like vl233.lbf1-2-prd.tw1.yahoo.com, vl-137.slb3-1-flk.tw1.yahoo.com and vl-121.slb5-143-pda.tw1.yahoo.com. slb and lbf are server load balancers, prd is production, and tw1 is the Taiwan site designator. Load-balancer VLAN interfaces are what sits in front of a server farm. Nothing in the sample looks like subscriber access: no dsl, no pool, no dhcp, no CGN.
• Only 1 observed BGP neighbour, which is decisive against any carrier or transit reading. A content network is a destination, not a path: it buys transit, peers where it can, and sells connectivity to no one.
• A backbone router surfaces in the sample too, te-9-1.bas1-1-prd.tw1.yahoo.com, which confirms this is first-party infrastructure rather than leased space carrying someone else's traffic.

Interesting

• Yahoo has cycled through owners (Verizon, then Apollo Global Management) while the AS handle and the tw1 site naming stayed put, a reminder that network identifiers outlive corporate ones.
