AS10178 KAKAOPAY-AS-KR Kakaopay Corp

KAKAOPAY-AS-KR is the network of Kakaopay Corp, the payments and fintech arm

of the Kakao group and one of the largest mobile-payment platforms in South

Korea. Despite serving millions of consumers, this is an enterprise network,

not an eyeball one.

What it's used for

• The internet-facing side of the Kakaopay platform: payment and settlement services, the securities and insurance subsidiaries added since 2020, and corporate systems such as mail.

Notable

• The kind is business, and the neighbour count settles it. RIS observes 11 IPv4 prefixes, 3,328 addresses and only 3 observed neighbours. A consumer-facing brand with tens of millions of users would look like an eyeball or hosting network if it carried its own users; instead it multihomes to three upstreams and terminates traffic on its own small footprint. Its users arrive over somebody else's access network.
• Reverse DNS on the sampled addresses supports first-party operation: 203.133.161.5 resolves to mailgs05.kakaopaycorp.com, i.e. Kakaopay's own mail gateway sitting inside its own space.
• The prefixes are a scattered patchwork of /24s from unrelated KRNIC ranges (211.181.143.0/24, 113.29.178.0/24, 210.103.253.0/24, 61.32.180.0/24 and others) rather than one clean allocation.

Interesting

• Kakaopay was only founded in 2017, but AS10178 sits in a block of numbers handed out in the late 1990s. The mismatch, and the scattered address space, are consistent with resources inherited through acquisition rather than requested fresh.
