AS10084 WAIA-TRANSIT-AP Western Australian Internet Association

WAIA-TRANSIT-AP is the auxiliary content network run by the Internet Association of Australia, the not-for-profit behind IX Australia. It is not the exchange fabric itself; it is the AS that hangs CDN caches and exchange infrastructure off that fabric.

What it's used for

IAA operates Australia's only neutral, not-for-profit peering exchange, with points of presence in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. AS10084 exists so that content providers can drop hardware into those PoPs and reach every IAA peer over one short path. The caches sitting behind it are the usual set: Netflix Open Connect, Meta Network Appliances, Steam and Microsoft Connected Cache. It also carries IAA's own operational plumbing.

Notable

The kind here is hosting, specifically cache hosting, and reverse DNS proves it rather than the handle. Sampled PTRs return collector01.nsw.ix.asn.au and metrics.wa.ix.asn.au — a route collector and a monitoring host, exactly the exchange-operations kit you would expect — alongside games03.wa.reload.gg, a game-server tenant. RIS sees 9 IPv4 prefixes / 2,304 addresses and 8 IPv6 prefixes with only 14 observed neighbours. Note what that combination rules out: the handle says TRANSIT, but a real wholesale carrier would show hundreds of neighbours. Fourteen is a small, deliberate peering set.

Interesting

The WAIA in the handle is a fossil. This began as the Western Australian Internet Association and went national, but the AS name never followed. The .asn.au PTRs are the honest label.
