INTERCONNECT1-AS-AP is Interconnect Networks Pty Ltd, a small South Australian internet and voice provider based at Smithfield, north of Adelaide. It runs several retail brands over one AS.

What it's used for

The AS carries connectivity, hosted voice and managed services for Australian customers. Reverse DNS shows the business rather than the marketing: voip-gui.interconnect.net.au is a voice platform, Service-709.interconnect.au is a numbered customer service, and ns2.cane.net.au is a nameserver — infrastructure and per-customer services, not a subscriber pool.

Notable

Two things settle the kind. First, scale: RIS sees only 6 IPv4 prefixes / 1,280 addresses plus a single 2400:a2e0::/32, with 2 observed neighbours. That is an end-provider with one or two upstreams, not a carrier and not a mass-market eyeball network — an ISP with a real residential base would need far more space than five /24s. Second, the PTRs are first-party across every brand, which matters: webshield.net.au and yorke.net.au names appear in the same space, and Webshield is a long-running South Australian content-filtered ISP. Distinct brands sharing one AS and one address block, all self-named, reads as a consolidator that acquired regional ISPs and never renumbered them — not as an address broker, since the space is registered to and named by the holder itself.

The surviving brand names are a fossil record of pre-NBN South Australian ISPs. yorke.net.au points at the Yorke Peninsula; webshield sold filtered access to families and schools.
