UNIWESTSYD-AS-AP is the network of Western Sydney University, the multi-campus public university formerly branded the University of Western Sydney. It is a textbook single-homed campus AS.

What it's used for

The AS carries the university's own estate: campus wired and wireless networks across Parramatta, Penrith, Campbelltown, Bankstown and the other sites, plus staff and student services, research infrastructure and public-facing web systems. It exists so the institution can hold and announce its own address space rather than take PA space from a provider.

Notable

This is education, and the routing is about as clean an example as the sweep produces. RIS sees exactly 1 IPv4 prefix — a 137.154.0.0/16, 65,536 addresses — and 1 observed neighbour. Both halves are diagnostic. A single unfragmented /16 is a legacy Class B handed to an early-connected university and never chopped up, which is what happens when one organisation uses its own space internally and never has to sell pieces of it. And one neighbour means one upstream: in Australia that upstream is effectively always AARNet, the national research and education network, which aggregates the universities and buys commodity transit on their behalf. A commercial network of 65k addresses would multihome as a matter of survival; a campus behind AARNet has no reason to.

Interesting

The size is deceptive. A /16 sounds enormous today, but it reflects when the university got online, not how big it is now — allocations from that era were generous and are almost never returned.
