ASN-ERDEMNET is ErdemNet, Mongolia's National Research and Education Network. It connects the country's universities, institutes and schools, and is the Mongolian counterpart to networks like AARNet or JANET.

What it's used for

ErdemNet was stood up in June 2000 under an ADB-funded education programme to link the major universities in Ulaanbaatar, originally hauling Internet traffic off the Agila-2 satellite and redistributing it over microwave. It has since moved to fibre and expanded, via the "New Century Education" project, into a genuinely national footprint covering the provinces. Governance moved in 2020 out of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology to an Information and Technology Centre state-owned enterprise under the education ministry, so it is now a state academic network rather than a single university's.

This is education, not a commercial ISP, and the routing agrees. RIS sees roughly 4,608 IPv4 addresses across a handful of prefixes anchored on a single 202.5.192.0/20, plus one 2404:ec80::/32 IPv6 allocation, and only 5 observed BGP neighbours. That combination is diagnostic: a modest, contiguous, long-held block and almost no peering is what an NREN looks like when it buys upstream from one or two national carriers and hands capacity down to member campuses. A commercial provider of the same size would carry far more customer-facing fragmentation.

Interesting

The handle carries its own history: AS-ERDEMNET was renamed ASN-ERDEMNET purely to stop it colliding with RPSL's as-set grammar, and the awkward name has outlived the reason for it. ErdemNet also peers into TEIN, the Asia-Europe research backbone.
