KVH is KVH Co., Ltd., founded in 1999 by Fidelity Investments as an Asia-Pacific enterprise carrier: metro fibre, data centres and managed IT aimed squarely at financial-services and multinational customers in Tokyo. Colt Technology Services bought KVH for about €130m in 2014, and the network now sits inside Colt's Asia footprint, but the AS still carries the original name.

What it's used for

Enterprise connectivity and hosted infrastructure. The AS announces 45 IPv4 prefixes totalling 110,848 addresses plus 4 IPv6 prefixes, including a substantial 2400:1000::/33. The prefix list is dominated by /21s and /22s — the granularity you get when space is assigned per corporate customer or per site, rather than pooled across a subscriber base.

Business, not eyeball, and not transit. The reverse DNS is the evidence: alongside KVH's own 203-167-48-5.rev.kvh.ne.jp, the sample turns up www2.toadkk.co.jp and CF027110040005.cims.jp — third-party corporate hostnames living on KVH's addresses. That is what a customer estate looks like on a managed-services provider. Nothing in the sample resembles a broadband pool. And 14 observed BGP neighbours against 110k addresses rules out the wholesale-carrier reading: a transit business of that size would peer with hundreds of ASes.

KVH built its business on low-latency links between Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore for electronic trading, which is why a network with a modest address count sits on high-value metro fibre. When you see a workload on this space, the tenant is usually a bank, a broker or a multinational's Japan office — not Colt itself.
