AS10014 NIHON-U Nihon University

NIHON-U is Nihon University (日本大学), one of the largest private universities in Japan, with faculties spread across Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Fukushima and Shizuoka. AS10014 is the university's own campus network.

What it's used for

Campus networking. The AS announces exactly one IPv4 prefix — 133.43.0.0/16, 65,536 addresses — and one IPv6 /48 (2001:df6:8000::/48). That is the classic university footprint: a single large legacy block, held since the era when a /16 was an ordinary academic allocation, carrying student and staff devices, lab and research machines, library systems, and the public-facing web and mail servers of dozens of faculties.

Notable

Education, and the routing settles it. The 133.x range is the block JPNIC historically handed to Japanese universities and research institutes, and Nihon University sits in the middle of it. The neighbour count corroborates: 3 observed BGP neighbours on 65k addresses is a stub network with a small number of upstreams — most likely a commercial ISP alongside the national academic backbone. A commercial network holding a /16 would peer far more widely; an eyeball ISP of that size would peer at exchanges. This one just wants a default route out.

The spec warning that "University in a legal name does not mean education" is worth stating and then dismissing here: in this case the name, the address block, the single aggregate and the stub topology all agree.

Interesting

The sampled addresses returned no PTRs, which says nothing either way — it was a two-address sample of a /16, not a survey. Build no inference on it.
